Broadcast journalism

While I haven't spent a lot of time making videos, I will take advantage of WSS's vast collection of video equipment to add a multimedia element to my stories.

My videos

Christian's corner: episode 2

This was the second episode of a series started by the 2024 Editor-in-Chief. “Christian’s corner” features West’s beloved art teacher Christian Aanestad who is not only known for his art skills, but also his bizarre stories. I filmed WSS Design Editor Anna Greenlee learning to throw pottery while listening to Aanestad talk about his life. I also did a rough cut of the video, and Greenlee finished off the editing process.

Q&A with West High transfer students

I did this video as a part of an article I wrote on transfer students. While I didn’t film or edit it, I was on camera interviewing a student about her experience attending schools all around the country. This video added a multimedia aspect to the story that also helped add a more human aspect to the students’ voices.

Behind the scenes of "The Secret Garden"

WSS has an ongoing series of videos that explore the work that goes into creating one of the school’s productions. For this video, I interviewed crew chiefs, filmed the interviews and b-roll, and did a rough cut of the video. I enjoyed making this because it allowed me to explore all the work that different crews did that people don’t usually get to see.

Video editing

As EIC, I look over everything, regardless of section. That means approving every video before it goes up on YouTube. While instating the Draft Day process, I also had to figure out the guidelines for video revision while it was still in production. The video editor and I decided it would be best for staff members to at bare minimum have all clips filmed and have a plan for editing by their draft day to allow for suggestions on the editing process as long as feedback on what is already filmed.

When I look at videos, I consider framing, length of frames, incorporation of interviews. I also check to make sure our video standards are met, looking for the fonts used, lower thirds, the WSS logo onscreen, and general journalistic style.
